Vehicle Air Conditioning Unit: Defogging/Demisting

During the winter season, vehicle windows and windscreen fogs up and blocks the driver’s view of the road. This is very dangerous and the driver must take action to remove the fog from the windows and the windscreen. It is unsafe to drive when the windows and the windscreen are not defogged properly. This is because the driver can be easily distracted when trying to operate their car air conditioning unit and fiddling with the A/C unit knobs on the dashboard. The driver must fully remove the fog before driving for a safe and comfortable ride.

Defogging/demisting is the process of using the vehicle air conditioning unit to remove fog from the windows. Defogging the windscreen is all about regulating the temperature and humidity inside the vehicle correctly. Although most vehicle owners are familiar with cleaning the outside of the windscreen, some forgets to clean the inside. To fight against continual fog and condensation, it is also important to clean the inside of the windscreen. Most drivers are aware of the benefits or air conditioning as a way to cool things down, but sometimes forget that the air conditioning unit is also capable of producing hot, dry air. Vehicle air conditioners cool your car on a hot day by removing water vapour from the air inside the car which reduces the temperature of the air. Operating your air conditioner will immediately start removing water vapour from your car on a cold morning too. The warm, moist breath will disperse into the air inside the car rather than condensing on the windscreen.

Your vehicle air conditioning unit can also be used a dehumidifier. So even while using warm air to defrost the windscreen, make sure that the air conditioning unit is turned on so your car will dehumidify the air before it warms it. Cool air from the air conditioner will dry the air and remove any moisture. The best way to operate the air conditioner is to start it on cold and then as the air in the car dries out, you can slowly increase the temperature.
